Product Review: Xan Confections – gluten free & vegan gourmet chocolates & caramels

Posted on | August 6, 2009 | 4 Comments

We are finally drifting back in our school routine at my house. The kids are back at school and I can finally settle in and crank out the reviews that have I have been itching to publish.
First up is a review a LONG time coming . . . weeks and weeks! As you can see from the photos above, these chocolates are gorgeous and nothing I have ever seen before. Before I popped one in my mouth, I checked the packaging and very clearly it states that “this product may contain wheat.” WHAT?!? No way was I going to eat it!
After many questioning emails with perfect and professional customer service responses, I was assured that they have to put the “wheat warning” label because one of their chocolates flavors contains graham cracker crumbs.  If I understand correctly, that particular product and flavor is produced on another line and not packaged with their gluten free chocolates and caramels unless you create a custom chocolate box and request that they do so.  Even better, I was also assured that regular batch testing occurs to verify their gluten free status.  In the coming weeks, Xan Confections will publish their test results on their website, to reassure consumers their gluten free products are, in fact, gluten free.
Whew. OK, on to the review!
So my children and I tried them and all I can say is WOW. Are these really vegan and gluten free? I couldn’t believe it!
The Jewel Collection: The shimmery jewel looking confections in the photo are part of the caramel line – all natural, gluten free, vegan and non dairy.  Each jewel has a smooth chocolate shell with a flowing caramel center featuring  different caramel flavors: coconut pecan, espresso almond, butterscotch caramel, ancho chili caramel, and chocolate caramel.  The flavors of these chocolates were quite remarkable- you begin with the sweet chocolate flavor, followed by the sweetness of caramel, and finished with a punch of flavor from the caramel filling flavors. I was impressed the nut varieties actually had a whole nut in the middle of the caramel, and beware of the ancho chili- it is spicy!
Saintly Sins Collection: This collection features three beautiful chocolates with a fruity center- strawberry, pineapple and raspberry. Again, there is a smooth chocolate shell filed with a flowy fruity and slightly messy filling that reminded me of thin jam.  The flavors were absolutely incredible- after tasting the chocolate, the fruit flavor hits you with a burst of intense flavor. Can you believe there is only 1 gram of fat, 5 g. carbs and 29 calories per piece in this collection?
Now, I am not sure if their other products share a production line with the gluten containing chocolate they produce, but I know that these two collections are safe and delicious.  I know what I want for Valentines Day next year!
Pros: vegan, all natural, perfect for gift giving and special occasions, unique appearance, flavorful
Cons: limited local availability
Rating: 5 stars

Hi…I just got my two boxes of Xan candies..Sat down as soon as they were a little more solid (had them delivered to Chicago in the heat) and as my daughter and I ate out first two delicious pieces we noticed something alarming. We turned over the box to find the ingredients…MILK, WHEAT FLOUR, BARLEY MALT FLOUR and COCOA BUTTER! I called Xan and a very nice girl answered the phone and said “sorry no one from the chocolate company is here! I am hoping that the boxes are just labeled with all the default ingredients but, what a terrible way to represent these Gluten Free, Dairy Free and Vegan candies. I will not get a call until tomorrow morning so my 51.00 dollars worth of candy will be in the fridge until then..So Upset!!!!!

I just wanted to let everyone know how nice the owner of the company was to deal with! Because of my whole mishap with the labeling she was kind enough to send me another small box of their awesome candy, free…Delicious!

These are SOOO “pretty”! I wish my kiddo would eat sweets (he will only eat cookies/bars … those ARE his only sweets he’ll eat. ONCE in a blue moon he’ll enjoy an Enjoy Life boom choco boom bar, but he much prefers the cocoa loco bars over them. These sound wonderful and the looks are SOO pretty!
