Product Review: Turtle Mountain: So Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt (gluten free, dairy free, soy free, vegan)

Posted on | March 15, 2009 | 5 Comments

Yum, I love yogurt! I was thrilled when Yoplait started labeling their yogurt “gluten free.”  However, when I tried soy based yogurts I was pretty disappointed. I just didn’t care for the flavor and texture. So, when a coconut  milk yogurt was sent my way, I was cautiously optimistic .
So Delicious coconut milk yogurts are produced by Turtle Mountain and are dairy free, soy free and gluten free, so they are definitely allergy friendly. I tested three flavors:
Vanilla: This was my favorite flavor, hands down. It was smooth, slightly thick and has a great vanilla flavor with a touch of coconut. I added granola and fresh berries to it with fantastic results. The flavor seemed to be missing the tangy flavor of traditional yogurt, but it’s lightly sweet vanilla flavor was great anyway.
Blueberry: I am not a fan of blueberries, but even I liked this yogurt! Again, the flavor is  mild and slightly sweet.  It also smells wonderful and has a fresh, smooth taste. Little bits of blueberry dot the yogurt and add a little punch to the flavor. The consistency seemed a bit runny to me, and definitely wasn’t thick enough to stick to a spoon. I think this flavor would actually be great in a smoothie!
Passionate Mango: The combination of passion fruit and mango in this gluten free yogurt is potent, to put it mildly. Right away you are hit with a “pow” or tartness, compliments of the passion fruit. This yogurt has the smoothness of other flavors and is moderately thick.
Overall, these So Delicious coconut milk yogurt flavors are tasty and flavorful, and an excellent alternative if you need to eat dairy and soy free, as well as gluten free. These yogurt flavors are ideal to eat alone or in a recipe. (Also available in raspberry, peach and cinnamon bun flavors.)
Pros: excellent flavor and texture, allergy friendly
Cons: I wish it was a bit thicker, the passionate mango flavor is a little too tart
Rating: 4 stars

I have only been able to get my hands on the blueberry and I agree – this stuff is great and not too sweet…

Hmm, I couldn’t even get through the first bite. I tried the vanilla flavor and was very disappointed. I’ve never had coconut before and maybe that is what I didn’t like about it. I had high hopes as I love yogurt and miss it the most since going GF/DF.

Gluten free and dairy free is perfect. The problem is that this has sugar in it! That is deathly for those of us who are sweetener – no sugar, agave, honey, etc.

Can you sweeten it with Stevia?

If not, can you just make a plain gluten free, soy free, dairy free, with no sweetener? That would be a totally unique product!
