Product Review: Sun Flour Mills French Bread and Pizza Crust Mix

Posted on | February 20, 2012 | No Comments

I am so  glad I found this Sun Flour Mills mix at my local Harmons grocery store! I paid $4.99 for the 17.4 ounce box,  and it makes two large loaves of gluten free French bread or two large pizza crusts. Or, if you’re me, one loaf of bread and one pizza crust for a yummy  dinner.

This gluten free mix takes a bit or prep, because you need to allow for rise and bake time.  But the end result is worth it!

To prepare the French bread, I added 4 egg whites, oil, vinegar and warm water and mix with my KitchenAid mixer
. To form the loaf I used a piece of plastic wrap sprayed with cooking spray, as the dough is very sticky and soft. I cut three slits on the top before I let it rise, to give it an authentic French bread look.  This french bread was mild in flavor and was a great base for creativity.  I added fresh chopped rosemary to the dough, and then sprinkled some herbed olive oil and sea salt on top before letting it rise.  The end result was a loaf of golden french bread that featured a crusty, crunchy crust and a chewy center that reminded me of “real” French bread. Even my gluten eating family loves this bread!

Preparing the pizza crust was a bit more frustrating, and honestly I wasn’t sure if it would turn out.  Because the dough was so soft and sticky, it was a beast to spread evenly in my pan.  After rising time and prebaking the crust, it looked even worse, very uneven and, well, ugly.  Since I was already invested, I decided to go ahead and add toppings and finish baking to see what would happen.  Thank goodness I did!  The crust seemed to magically even out and settle into a chewy, medium thick crust that tasted pretty good.  Like the french bread, the flavor tasted mild and paired great with my fresh and spicy toppings.  For an extra crispy crust, I would suggest using a pizza stone.  My family had no problem finishing off the pizza.

On the box, there are also recipes to make bagels, donuts and bread sticks.  I would love to give those a try!
