Pamela’s Products Chocolate Brownie Mix – gluten & wheat free

Posted on | May 6, 2007 | 5 Comments

I purchased Pamela’s brownie mix from my local food store for $5.99. The 16 ounce package makes an 8×8 pan of brownies.

The brownies were easy to mix, but much more challenging to spread in the pan. The batter is very thick and tends to stick to my spatula when I spread it.These brownies also contain large chunky bits of chocolate, which help make these brownies rich and chocolaty.

Fresh from the oven, the brownies are very gooey and need to completely cool in order for them to hold  their shape when sliced. The flavor seems almost separated- I could distinctly taste the rice flour, cocoa and molasses ( not too great). However, when completely cooled and let set for an hour or so, the flavors seemed more blended and the brownies were much easier to slice and remove from the pan. Also, these cooled brownies were not nearly as gooey and seemed almost dry and cake-like.  The texture was just slightly grainy and crumbly. No weird aftertaste was detected.

Overall, these brownies are OK, and taste best with some vanilla ice cream. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed, since Pamela’s pother products are usually amazing.

I found it interesting that this brownie mix also included recipes for cake and cookies ( both utilizing this mix) on the side panel. They may be worth a try!

Pros: great chocolate chunks, easy to prep, nice appearance

Cons: really sweet, rice flour flavor & texture a bit strong

Rating: 3 stars

This is really an excellent resource, Karen. Your reviews are so thorough!

I have been disappointed with brownie mixes myself- and Pamela’s products are normally great!

    Thanks Natalie!
It’s true- I totally agree with you. I have two more brownie reviews in the works that look promising. They should be up in the next week or so.

    Hi Karen,
I just found your blog and I’m so elated! Thank you for your website and reviews! Being new on this gluten free journey is a bit overwhelming and any kind of guidance is greatly appreciated…

Can you please review Bob’s Red Mill GF Brownie mix and Namaste GF Brownie mix? I tried Bob’s last night and I thought they were pretty stellar. I have a bag of Pamela’s in my pantry, which I was going to try as well to compare to the Bob’s. I just want your opinion on the Bob’s to get a basepoint review since I know how you feel about Pamela’s.

I have made these 20+ times and get rave reviws from everyone who tries them – GF or not. I do the fudgie recipe (oil and water) and add a lot of crushed pecans. I don’t make the fudge in a pan – too difficult to work with; I use a mini muffin pan instead. They’re the right size for a small dessert – especially since they’re so sweet.
