When my husband and I snuck away sans kids to San Diego last month, he surprised me with our first stop- a bakery that makes gourmet gluten free cupcakes!
Cupcakes Squared Bakery is tucked away in the corner of a strip-mall type area about 10 minutes from the San Diego airport. I had a chance to chat with the owner, who is very careful ensuring the cupcakes are gluten free, since the bakery also specializes in gluten cupcakes. They bake their gluten free cupcakes first thing in the morning after a hefty sanitizing the evening before, to ensure there is no cross contamination. The cupcakes are also displayed on a separate display, and they automatically box up the gluten free cupcakes separate from the other bakery items.
I tried the banana and chocolate cupcakes, and both were sinfully divine. They cupcakes are square in shape (thus the name of the bakery) and super moist. So much so, the chocolate flavor literally stuck to the roof of my mouth! The chocolate gluten free cupcake was very, very sweet and begged for a glass of milk. The banana flavor, on the other hand, was , much less sweet and had a mild, but fresh banana flavor. The creamy frosting on top balanced the banana flavor really well, and I think it was my favorite of the two. These did not taste gluten free, and I enjoyed every crumb! I honestly have no idea how much they cost since my husband paid for them, but in reality I didn’t care because it was a treat for a special occasion.
