Product Review: Goldbaum’s Zesty Rice Crisps (3 flavors: Sweet Chili, Garlic & Original) – gluten free/ sugar free/ kosher/ organic

I have snacked on many rice crisps since going gluten free two years ago. I wanted a substitute for the light, crispy crackers I used to enjoy.

Well, I’m not going to lie, it’s just not the same. But I have learned that a gluten free product doesn’t have to be “the same” in order to be good. It took me a while to appreciate that, but it can still be frustrating when all you want is a Triscuit.

These baked gluten free rice crisp crackers from Goldbaums are similar to other rice crackers. They are smooth, flat, wafer like crackers. They are also crispy, and unfortunately, break easily. Despite the fact that these crackers are packages in dual protective plastic trays in stay fresh wrappers, 25% of my crackers were crumbled and broken. That didn’t stop me from eating them though. They were pretty good! All flavors tasted pure and I did not notice any aftertaste that sometimes is present in gluten free crackers.

I tested the three following flavors:

Sweet Chili Flavor: (my favorite flavor)have a nice kick of flavor and spice to them. In fact, you can even see the flecks of spice on these gluten free rice crackers. As you eat them, the flavor and spice really increases. These crackers taste great and pair perfectly with steaming bowl of chili

Garlic Flavor: has a really strong garlic flavor with a subtle sweetness. I enjoyed these with a sandwich or soup.

Original Flavor: the most versatile flavor, These crackers are mildly flavored and would pair well with just about anything, or would be great alone as a snack.

Overall, this is a pleasant tasting gluten free product that I would buy for snacks and meals. Each  3.7 ounce package sells for around $3.50.

Product Review: Goldbaum’s Gluten Free Ice Cream Cones – Vegan/ Kosher

Whether you are a kid or a kid at heart, you will absolutely love these gluten free ice cream cones by Goldbaum’s! These ice cream cones are packaged in two packs for freshness, and contains 12 cones per  1.76 ounce box and costs $3.93.

These ice cream cones taste exactly like the traditional wheat version I grew up on as a kid, and the kind I used to enjoy with my children. Now I don’t have to miss out anymore when our family splurges on a fun dessert.

These cones are light, crispy and have a subtle slightly scent although they do not really taste sweet. These gluten free ice cream cones also do not get soggy or fall apart when you bite into them and hold a healthy mount of ice cream. My children and I loved them and they asked if we could get the “ice cream cones mommy can eat” every time.

What really got me excited is the thought that children with celiac disease or with wheat/ gluten intolerance or allergies can join in with other kids and not feel left out, or that they have to make due with “special” gluten free products. That really makes me happy.

Thank you Goldbaum’s- This is an excellent product that I can’t recommend highly enough.

PROS:taste and texture and exactly like traditional ice cream cones, great price,  14 calories per cone, 0g. fat!

Cons: None that I can find!

Product Review: Goldbaum’s Brown Rice Spaghetti Pasta- gluten free/ all natural/ dairy free

Goldbaum’s sent me this gluten free brown rice spaghetti to try out, and I was really curious how it would compare to my stand by favorite, Tinkyada Brown Rice Spaghetti. That is some pretty steep competition! These noodles sell for $2.99 for a one pound bag.

First, I Iiked that these noodles cooked faster than Tinkyada pasta. I cooked these gluten free spaghetti noodles for nine minutes and I found this time to be perfect if you like an al dente pasta.

The noodles were chewy, but soft, and withstood the fork test easily. When I twirled the noodles around on my fork, they did not break or split and held their shape beautifully.  As you can see from the photo above, these brown rice noodles gripped the marinara sauce amazingly well. I was really impressed.

The flavor is mild and would pair well with any sauce and would be ideal in many recipes.

Overall, these gluten free noodles seemed almost exactly like al dente wheat pasta! I would be happy to stock them in my own pantry to use for my whole (picky eating) family.

Pros: fast cooking time, grips sauce, pleasant flavor, flexible, affordable

Cons: if you want a softer noodle, the cooking time will be longer

Rating: 5 stars

Product Review: Goldbaum’s Natural Foods Crispinis – plain and salt & black pepper flavors/ all natural/ kosher

More crispini flavors from Goldbaum’s Natural Foods!

I was so impressed with their onion and garlic gluten free crackers, that I had high hopes for their other two flavors. I was happy to discover that these rice crisp-like crackers were thick and sturdy, and perfect for on-the-go snacking.

These crackers came in a single serving sized package and appear exactly like the Goldbaum’s Onion & Garlic flavor- same color, texture and size. Both flavors are also low in fat ( 1 gram) and lower in calories at 110 calories per bag.

*****

Plain flavor: These had a light and mildly sweet flavor accented by the sea salt. These crackers are simply perfect by themselves, but would pair well with any flavor dip. They are also thick enough to handle a hearty dip if you wish. Ingredients: Rice, sugar, rice bran oil, sea salt, yeast extract, natural vitamin E oil, citric acid

Rating: 5 stars

*****

Salt & Black Pepper flavor: These gluten free crackers are similar to the “plain” flavor thanks to the additional of sea salt, but were less sweetness and also boast a kick of black pepper ( in powder form). This makes for a stronger, but controlled flavor that is different and interesting. Ingredients: rice, rice bran oil, sea salt, sugar, yeast extract, black pepper powder, natural vitamin E oil, citric acid

Something esle I like about these crackers is that the single serve bags only cost $1.11! They also make a perfect travel snack since they are packaged well enough so prevent any crushing or breaking of the rice crisp crackers. These flavors are also available in larger multi-serving size bags.

Goldbaum’s Onion & Garlic Crispinis gluten free crackers – wheat free/ kosher/ low fat

Goldbaum’s sent me these kosher, gluten free crispini crackers to try, and I have to admit, I was skeptical. I have tried many rice based gluten free crackers, and wasn’t expecting much.

However, I was pleasantly surprised- these gluten free snack crackers are really great!

I sampled their 3.5 ounce bag of onion & garlic crispini crackers, and marveled at how many crackers the bag actually contained- definitely enough for two to share.

The baked crackers are quite thick compared to other rice thin crackers I have sampled and provide a hearty crunch without crumbling. The texture is slightly bumpy  and the base flavor of the cracker is a mild rice blend. The onion and garlic flavor comes through from a fine powdered coating on the crackers that will eventually coat your fingers. A gentle sweetness comes through as well. These crackers do not taste salty , which I really liked.

My six year old daughter- the ultimate picky eater- absolutely loved these crackers and begged for me to buy them for her school lunch.  These crackers are definitely a winner at my house!

Rating: 5 stars

Pros: great flavor and texture, baked not fried, low fat (1 gram per serving)

Cons: I need a bigger bag!
