Product Review: Amy’s Bowls Mexican Casserole – no gluten ingredients

Having a hot and convenient meal handy on rushed days is always a good thing, and if you are craving a hint of Mexican flavor, this may be for you. However, consumer beware, this product is labeled ” no gluten ingredients” not “gluten free” because it is produced in a facility that handles wheat. So eat at your own risk. Personally, I have never had a reaction to any Amy’s products, but I know some of my readers have. Just so you know.
This is another one of Amy’s Bowls meals- an all in one, hot meals that is ready in about five minutes or so in the microwave. You can cook it in the oven, but why bother? At that point it defeats the purpose of being convenient in my opinion.
True to many casseroles I have sampled in my day, this is a soft, somewhat mushy combination of thick pieces of corn masa, organic corn, organic black beans, monterey cheese, and enchilada sauce, all combined in a meal you can eat with a spoon. The enchilada sauce is quite mild in flavor and spiciness. The overall flavor of the bowl was decent, but I could not taste of the black beans at all. The corn masa seemed a bit strange to me because it didn’t seem to taste like much, but really helped to fill up the bowl.
There is a slight texture and pop in your mouth with the corn, but the rest is soft and baked together. There is enough monterey jack cheese to be stringy and melted, but it doesn’t look anything like the picture on the box. (But hey, I think that is the case with most frozen food products!) I found this gluten free frozen meal to be quite filling and satisfying- I definitely wasn’t hungry afterward. It would also make a nice hot lunch option at the office.
Pros: nice Mexican flavor, easy to prep, just the right amount of cheese
Cons: labeled as ” no gluten ingredients,” not “gluten free”; somewhat mushy, no bean flavor
Rating: 3 1/2 stars

Maybe I got a bad one.
But I had this and it was terrible. Like 80% tastelessly strange masa and corn, with very few beans and no discernible onions olives and whatever else was supposedly in it.
I’d only give it 2 out of 5 stars, and thats being generous, as it was basically just a bowl of masa.
The Goob hath ruled. Avoid this one.
