Product Review: Amy’s Indian Mattar Tofu

Ahh, we had Mexican food yesterday, and today . . . gluten free Indian food! All compliments of Amy’s Kitchen.
Now I have to admit, I am on the fence about Indian style food- some I like and some I don’t, so I wasn’t sure what to expect with Amy’s Mattar Tofu meal. It is found in the frozen food section of your local grocery store and cooks up in just a few minutes in the microwave for a quick, no fuss meal. It is also dairy free and vegan.
As you can see for the picture above, it doesn’t look very appetizing. However, the flavor and texture was pretty good. Here’s a quick rundown of the three parts of this gluten free frozen meal:
Mattar Tofu: Looked pretty bad, wrinkled peas and tofu bits smothered in a lightly curried sauce. I noticed a slow burn and spice flavor. Despite the less than lovely appearance and my dislike for peas, I actually like the fresh flavor and texture.
Basmati Rice: Looked tasty- nice and fluffy. It cooked up just right in the microwave and tasted good when combined with the dal.
Dal: Looked awful- a greenish brown goop that was supposed to be mung dal cooked with tomato, onion and seasonings. However, when I mixed it with the rice it tasted really good.
Overall, this frozen gluten free Indian meal tasted pretty good, even though it looked less than appetizing. In fact, even if you don’t Indian food, this product is flavored s that a large variety of people would find the flavor appetizing- the curry and spices tastes fairly mild and subdued. I think this would make a great lunch option if you are sick of the standard gluten free pizza or pasta frozen meals.
Pros: Nice flavor, rice cooks perfectly, doesn’t taste like a freezer meal
Cons: doesn’t look very appetizing
Rating: 4 stars
